When Ford announced performance specifications for the 2018 F-150, the company was surprisingly coy about the 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine that will be offered in the truck next spring.

Now we’re starting to learn more about the engine as Truck Trend is reporting the powertrain will be sourced from Jaguar Land Rover.

Citing an unidentified JLR employee, the publication is reporting the F-150 will use the same 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine that is offered in the Land Rover Discovery. The engine produces 254 hp (189 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque in that particular model but it remains unclear if the output will change in Ford’s application.

The report goes on to note that JLR recently announced plans to double the size of its Wolverhampton engine plant and hire an additional 700 employees. At the time, JLR said the expansion was needed to keep up with demand but it’s possible that Ford’s decision to use the engine also played a part in the expansion.

At launch, the 2018 F-150 will be offered with an all-new 3.3-liter V6 that produces 290 hp (216 kW) and 265 lb-ft (358 Nm) of torque. The company will also offer a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine with 325 hp (242 kW) and 400 lb-ft (541 Nm) of torque as well as a 5.0-liter V8 that develops 395 hp (294 kW) and 400 lb-ft (541 Nm) of torque.

Update:
Ford North America Trucks and Commercial Vehicles Product Communications Manager, Jiyan Cadiz, has reached out to us to deny Truck Trend’s report. Cadiz says the new 3.0-liter Power Stroke engine will be built at the company’s Dagenham plant in the United Kingdom and it has been “designed, engineered and manufactured by Ford specifically for the new F-150.” Cadiz went on to say “Just think about the durability / payload / towing needs an F-150 customer would have – and that’s why this engine has to be unique.”
