Automakers left and right are flocking to join the Formula E championship. Sergio Marchionne has taken notice, but if he green-lights one of the brands over which he presides to enter the electric racing series, it won’t be Ferrari.
Autosport reports that Marchionne recently met with Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff to discuss the escalating popularity of the electric racing series. Mercedes recently made the shocking announcement that it was leaving DTM (but staying in F1) to focus on a Formula E entry.
“I talked with Toto, but I do not think Ferrari enters directly,” Marchionne said when asked about the meeting. “However, we are thinking of doing so as FCA. And if we will enter, with one of the brands from the group, we do not know which one it will be right now.”
Brands under FCA’s umbrella which could potentially field an entry in Formula E include Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat/Abarth, Dodge, and Chrysler – in that order of likelihood, it would seem. Maserati in particular is placing an increased focus on electrification, while its targeted rivals like Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Porsche have all launched their own participation in the series.
