Apple chief executive Tim Cook has confirmed that the technology company is working on autonomous systems and hinted that they could extend beyond use in vehicles.
During an Apple earnings call reported by The Verge, Cook said the company is investing heavily in the development of autonomous systems, backing up previous rumors that Apple was doing just that.
“We are very focused on autonomous systems. We do have a large project going, and are making a big investment in this. From our point of view, autonomy is sort of the mother of all AI projects.
“Autonomous systems can be used in a variety of ways. A vehicle is only one, but there are many different areas of it. And I don’t want to go any further with that,” Cook said.
While no one outside of Apple knows exactly how progressed the company’s autonomous project is or what it could be used for, it is widely speculated that Apple may offer an autonomous driving system to car manufacturers. Beyond that, it could consider using the technology throughout the supply and manufacturing chain from things like autonomous factory robots, warehouse assistants and delivery services.
