Dubai’s main taxi company has just taken delivery of 50 Tesla Model S and X vehicles and plans to eventually use them to form part of an autonomous taxi fleet.

For now, the vehicles will be based at Dubai’s international airport and have drivers behind the wheel but have their Autopilot capabilities enabled for the city’s streets.

In a statement, president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, chairman of Dubai Airports, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline & Group and chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said a further 75 Tesla models will be delivered in 2018 and a final 75 are set to arrive in 2019.

It is unclear how much the Tesla taxis will cost nor when they will start providing rides.
