Nissan has announced a temporary suspension of all new vehicle registrations on dealer lots and factory inventory in Japan.
This is part of the process Nissan agreed to implement with the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport after its domestic production plants were caught not following the correct procedure for the JDM vehicle-type approval.
Nissan says in its press release that the Japanese MLIT found that certain checks were carried out by technicians not properly authorised to perform these duties under Nissan’s own processes, with the company since then correcting the inspection process and registrations for vehicles since produced being carried out as normal.
The affected cars will be re-inspected correctly and registrations will resume as the checks are completed. As for the already sold affected vehicles, owners will be contacted with instructions on how they can get their cars re-inspected.
Nissan has also invited an independent third party to participate in its internal investigation as well.
