What you see here are the very first spy shots of BMW’s upcoming 2-Series Gran Coupe, a new Bavarian four-door sedan to slot underneath the 3-Series.
Rumored to debut in 2020, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe with the codename F44 is around 4.5 meters long, roughly the same length with the current 2-Series Gran Tourer, aiming to rival models like the next Mercedes CLA.
The new 2-Series Gran Coupe will be front-driven as the rest of the next-gen small BMWs, as turning it into a rear-driven car was deemed too expensive and too close for comfort to the 3-Series. An optional xDrive all-wheel drive system will be offered.
Based on the same underpinnings of the also upcoming 1-Series, the Gran Coupe version of the 2-Series will also share most of its engine options, including petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains with three- and four-cylinders. Sadly, there will be no six-cylinder option this time.
Inside sources indicate that BMW wants to pay tribute to the iconic 2002 design with the next 2-Series, so expect to see an even more differentiated front end design from the 1-Series and a coupe-like roof line in the case of the Gran Coupe version.
