BMW has just opened a new battery factory in China with its local partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings.

The facility is located in Shenyang, China and will supply the company’s nearby Dadong plant, building the BMW 5-Series Plug-in Hybrid for the local market. BMW also operates battery factories in Dingolfing and Spartanburg.

The two production stages needed to construct BMW’s batteries will be conducted at the Shenyang plant. The first stage involves checking the supplied lithium-ion cells and then combining them into a large battery module. These modules are then mounted together in an aluminum housing designed to perfectly slot into each hybrid BMW makes.

Discussing the facility, member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for production, Oliver Zipse said the new factory is just one step in BMW’s electrified future.

“The innovative High-Voltage Battery Centre in Shenyang is an important step in the BMW Group’s electro-mobility strategy. It is the first battery factory of any premium automotive manufacturer in China and already the third in our production network, after Germany and the US.”
