Keep pace for some of the world’s fastest tin-top racers isn’t a task for just any car. For the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the job falls to the Volvo V60 Polestar.
The Swedish automaker and its racing partner introduced the modified wagon to the series last year, and has now unveiled a new one with additional modifications for the task.
Dubbed “the world’s safest Safety Car,” the new Polestar wagon features a comprehensively revised aero kit. The revised front splitter, side skirts, and rear spoiler are all made of carbon fiber, and provide 30 percent more downforce than last year’s model.
“With its high safety levels and easily accessible performance designed for all-year drivability, the Volvo V60 Polestar makes a perfect Safety Car,” said Thed Björk, Polestar’s star driver who’s currently leading the championship, and helped develop the safety car. “The new aerodynamic enhancements make the car even more predictable and rewarding to drive in inspired or critical situations, both on the roads and on the racing circuits.”
Based on the 367-horsepower road-going wagon, the safety car version features a roll cage, emergency rescue equipment, and communications gear to carry out its duty.
