Those who thought that Land Rover could use more models with sloping rooflines are in luck, because a genuine Coupe version of the Range Rover seems to be in the works.
It was the automaker’s design boss Gerry McGovern that hinted at a two-door Range Rover last year in LA, and that’s when the possibility of an SVO-built Range Rover Coupe first dawned on us.
“There’s probably less market for a two-door [Evoque], and given that we have a cabriolet there’s no need,” said McGovern, before adding that “as we get bigger you can think about going two-door because it becomes more exclusive, which might give you a hint.”
Now, while this prototype appears to have four doors, a closer look at the camouflage indicates that those rear door handles might be fake, judging by the wacky rear door lines and the rear wheel arch. Basically, there seems to be very little room for a rear door.
Also interesting is that back in 1970 when the first-generation Range Rover first came out, it was a two-door – the four-door didn’t even exist until 1981. So not only would this all-new Range Rover Coupe be highly exclusive, but there’s also a precedent for it.
When viewed from the front, despite the camouflage, this looks like a regular Range Rover. The rear however is clearly more sporty thanks to the sloping roofline. There’s also no indication that the taillights are any different than on a regular 2018 Range Rover.
Since this is the first ever sighting of the car, don’t expect an unveiling any time soon, such as Geneva.
