JLR Confirms Range Rover EV, But Will Delay It Along With Electric Jaguar XJ

While reports of a fully electric Range Rover are nothing new, some believe that it won’t just be a derivative, but rather a completely new model, with a lower profile than the Velar, yet a similar length.

Before you get too excited, it seems that we’re going to have to wait a while longer before laying our eyes on not just the Range Rover EV, but also the all-new and fully electric Jaguar XJ – both of which will share the same MLA underpinnings.

According to a conference call transcript seen by Autocar, JLR’s CFO Adrian Mardell told investors that the two electric models will be revealed in October and November, instead of August and September as planned. Mardell also spoke of an unknown new product dubbed “MLA MID”, which has also been delayed.

The JLR exec reassured investors that engineering work on the next-gen Range Rover and Range Rover Sport hadn’t been paused during the lockdown, and that work on the Defender 90 also went on as planned.

At one point, an investor representing an international bank asked about the carmaker’s plans to cut investments into future models, pointing to a new £3 billion figure being nearly £1 billion lower than in earlier plans. Mardell described this £3 billion investment as “more the kind of level going forward,” hinting that JLR will reduce the number of derivatives for future models in a bid to save money.

He also said that the new Defender should prove to be a “game changer” in terms of sales, especially with so many new versions in the pipeline. Apparently JLR expects to sell as many as 100,000 Defenders per year in the long run.
