A blue 1988 BMW M3 is up for auction in Richmond, Virginia.
It is no secret that E30-generation M3s are beloved by enthusiasts and car collectors. Many of those we see hit the used car market are stock, but this model has been extensively modified yet largely retains its original looks.

Most notably, the E30 M3’s standard four-cylinder engine has been replaced by the 3.2-liter naturally aspirated S54 six-cylinder from the E46 M3, Z3 M and Z4 M. The seller notes the engine had 99,000 miles (~159,000 km) on the clock when slotted into the E30’s engine bay.
Parts including the water pump, alternator, power-steering pump, drive belt, belt tensioner, thermostat, thermostat housing, valve-cover gaskets, and exhaust manifold gaskets have all been replaced. Mated to the engine is a ZF five-speed manual transmission that features a new flywheel, clutch assembly, and shifter bushings.
Elsewhere, the entire exterior, including the engine bay, has been repainted. The interior has also been extensively updated with new Alcantara-clad Recaro seats complete with blue contrast stitching. There is also an aftermarket shifter and an Alcantara steering wheel.
The Bring A Trailer auction reveals the car has a bit of a chequered history. In December 1991, it was reported stolen before being recovered in January 1992. It was later issued a reconstructed salvage title in Oregon in 1994 and renewed salvage title/certificates in Oregon through 2001.
