Just how much power does a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 need to accelerate harder than a Porsche 911 Turbo S? As it turns out, a lot.

This video was put together by Hennessey Performance and showcases John Hennessey’s personal 2021 911 Turbo S being pitted against a modified Shelby GT500 equipped with the tuner’s Venom 1000 package. As the name suggests, the Mustang delivers 1,000 hp when running on E85 or 900 hp with regular pump gas thanks to modifications made to the 5.2-liter supercharged V8.

Rather than performing the race from a standing start, which would give the all-wheel drive Porsche a significant advantage, the duo instead line up for a rolling race aimed at replicating a race on the street.

As soon as the drivers pin the throttles of the two cars, it is the Ford that jumps out to an early lead in the first of the two races, owing to its significant power advantage. However, in the second race, the results are much closer, even though it is the GT500 once again that takes the victory.

Obviously, a 1,000 hp Ford Mustang is very impressive, but we are equally impressed by how close the 911 Turbo S was. After all, its 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine ‘only’ pumps out 641 hp at 6,750 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) between 2,500 – 4,000 rpm, putting it at a significant disadvantage to the Ford.
