BMW is setting a new standard for rear-seat entertainment with its new Theatre Screen that was announced at CES 2022. The new feature shown off today is said to be very close to what will find its way into production BMWs very soon.
At its heart, it’s a 31-inch retractable display with a resolution of up to 8K that extends from the headliner at the press of a button. Still, there’s much more than just a widescreen to get excited about. This smart display is equipped with Amazon Fire TV.
That means it’ll work just like the Fire TV stick you might already own at your house. It will also benefit from 5G connectivity so it can stream all of the same movies, tv shows, music, and podcasts that can be found on Amazon Fire TV right now. Of course, if you’re in China you’ll get a P.R.C.-friendly version.

Passengers can choose from 16:9 or 32:9 formats. They do so by using either the control menu in the infotainment system or the touch control panels that are integrated into the rear door handles.
The audio system is none other than the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system. It uses unique features including diamond-dome tweeters to provide a multifaceted sound experience.
We’ve seen a lot of different approaches to rear-seat entertainment in the past, but never before has any brand ever gone this far though. Dual screens have been all the rage lately and we expect that to continue but this big screen is still groundbreaking.
This is very much in keeping with BMW’s theme at CES of evoking emotion through technology. They’ve also released new My Modes including Expressive and Relax.
BMW gave no direct indication of exactly which production car will feature the Theatre Screen first but we expect it to ship sometime this year. In addition, we’d be surprised if it doesn’t make it into other BMW-owned entities like Rolls Royce.
