Ford Tourneo Custom Debuts With Diesel, PHEV, And Full Electric Options

Following the debut of the 2024 Ford Transit Custom range, the time has arrived for the reveal of the model’s passenger version, Europe’s new Tourneo Custom. Just like the panel van, the MPV will be available in electric, plug-in hybrid, and diesel versions, and in the more adventurous Active version.

The new Ford Tourneo Custom is basically a Transit Custom with rear windows. The crossover-style Active features plastic cladding, skid plates, and roof rails, the Sport gets bumper and side skirt extensions, while the Titanium X is the most premium-looking of the bunch, with standard 19-inch alloy wheels and full matrix LED lighting. Each trim is available with all the powertrain options.

Inside, the highlight is the track-mounted rear seating. The Tourneo Custom has a three-row layout which means it can fit up to eight people in the EV variant or up to nine people in the PHEV and diesel variants. In both cases, the rear seats can fold, slide, or be completely removed, allowing all different kinds of interior arrangements. The cabin is easily accessible through the power-operated sliding doors and the integrated side steps.

The dashboard has a 13-inch touchscreen for the SYNC 4 infotainment, a digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, and clever storage compartments while the tilting steering wheel can transform into a small table for the driver. Other features include a B&O audio system with 14 speakers and a subwoofer, digital key cards with NFC technology, a 5G modem, and an optional panoramic glass roof. Owners will also have access to Ford Pro services including remote control functions and over-the-air software updates. In the safety department, a full range of ADAS is available including the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering.

Electric, Plug-in Hybrid, and Diesel Powertrains

In terms of powertrains, the focus is on the E-Tourneo Custom, which is one of the four fully electric Ford Pro models set to arrive in Europe by 2024. It is based on a new platform featuring an independent rear suspension and a lower floor height compared to its predecessor. The EV comes fitted with a single electric motor producing 214 hp (160 kW / 217 PS) and 415 Nm (306 lb-ft) of torque. Ford says that the towing capacity of the EV is 2,000 kg (4,409 pounds).

The battery pack with a capacity of 74 kWh is good for a 370 km (230 miles) range which is 10 km (6.2 miles) shorter than the E-Transit WLTP estimates. The battery can charge in eight hours from the standard onboard 11 kW AC charger, but it is also compatible with 120 kW DC fast charging replenishing 38 km (24 miles) of range in five minutes.

The plug-in hybrid variant will be fitted with a 2.5-liter petrol engine and an electric motor – just like the Ford Kuga PHEV. The 11.8 kWh battery will allow 50 km (31 miles) of zero-emission range.

As for the EcoBlue diesel, it comes in three different power outputs – 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS), or 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) – offering a choice of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. For those who require more traction, Ford is offering an all-wheel-drive option for the automatic Tourneo Custom, or an optional mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle for the manual variants. The diesel-powered all-wheel-drive Ford Tourneo Custom has the highest braked towing capability of 2,500 kg (5,512 pounds) combined with a retractable towbar.

The Ford Tourneo Custom range is produced by Fort Otosan in Kocaeli, Turkey. The first deliveries in Europe are scheduled for mid-2023 starting with the diesel-powered models and followed by other variants later in the year.
