These are some of the very first spy shots of the next generation Porsche Cayman sports coupe snagged while performing the usual tests on the track. As is the case with the current Cayman, the German firm’s entry-level coupe will be based on the Boxster, the third generation of which is currently undergoing development and has been covered extensively by Carscoop. The two models will share the same architecture, mechanical hardware including the engine range and suspension bits as well as interior parts.

Albeit shot from a distance, the spy pictures suggest that the new Cayman’s bodywork will be an evolution of the current model with a slightly larger rear window. At the same time, Porsche will no doubt try to improve space utilization and increase the car’s practicality helped by the longer wheelbase of the next Boxster’s platform.

Under the skin, and more specifically towards the rear, there have been rumors about Porsche giving into the recent powertrain trends by developing a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine to be used in both the Cayman and its drop top sibling, the Boxster.

The new Cayman will be priced and positioned between the Boxtser and the 911 with its introduction onto the market set for sometime next year.
