Joining the brand-new S7 Sportback in its world premiere at next month’s Frankfurt motor show will be the latest iterations of Audi’s S6 saloon and Avant models.

If you’ve already read the story on the S7, then you won’t be surprised to learn that both the S6 and S6 Avant pack the same 4.0-liter TFSI twin-turbocharged V8 with 420-horses and a constant 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) of torque from 1,400 to 5,300 rpm, which replaces the naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 of the previous model.

Once again, power flows to the wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and Audi’s permanent all-wheel drive system.

In terms of performance, the S6 sedan is slightly faster than the S7 when it comes to acceleration as it completes the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 4.8 seconds, while the Avant versions matches the five-door model with a time of 4.9 seconds.

Both the S6 sedan and station wagon have an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155mph).

The smaller displacement of the V8 unit along with the cylinder deactivation system that shuts down four cylinders under part load, help reduce fuel consumption by as much as 25 per cent over the older V10 models, with the S6 sedan returning a combined figure of 9.7 liters per 100 km (24.3mpg US), and the Avant, 9.8 liters (24.0mpg US).

The S6 models come standard with Audi’s adaptive air suspension with variable damping that lowers the body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in), and a more powerful braking system. As with the S7, carbon fiber-ceramic discs are offered as an option.

Both the S6 sedan and Avant feature all the signature styling traits of Audi’s S series including bespoke bumper and front grille designs, side sills, larger alloy wheels (19-inch standard, 20-inch optional) along with sport seats and steering wheel, and bespoke trim in the cabin.

The S6 sedan and Avant will go on sale early next year.
