According to media reports, Infiniti is planning to unveil a limited edition of its FX50 SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The new edition is inspired by last year’s Formula 1 world champion, Sebastian Vettel. Infiniti already sponsors the Red Bull F1 cars, which are powered by its partner, Renault, and wants to get the best out of this partnership.
Four months ago, before the Shanghai Grand Prix, the 24-year old world champion who is already an Infiniti “ambassador” drove an Infiniti FX50 in a demonstration (as you can watch in the video that follows) describing it as “sporty” and “very well handling”.
In addition, his company car is –you guessed it- an FX50. Expect the Vettel limited edition to sport F1 cues such as lot of carbon fiber in the interior and probably a (Vettel-signed perhaps?) limited-series plaque on the console.
But there is another issue that arises from this announcement. Could this be, as we speculated, the first step in Red Bull’s involvement with Infiniti in the road car business? After all the team’s director himself, Christian Horner, said that “it is a natural evolution to get involved in road car engineering.”
Well, we still insist that a G37 coupe would be a more appropriate choice, but that’s up to the marketing people to decide.
