General Motors announced that 61-year old Nick Reilly, president of GM Europe, has decided to retire in March 2012. Reilly has been with the company for 37 years, serving in various positions in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Reilly will be succeeded by Karl Friedrich Stracke, former vice president of GM Global Engineering and current CEO of Opel/Vauxhall. Stracke will replace Reilly on January 1, 2012 and will join GM’s Executive Operations Committee, while retaining his position as Opel/Vauxhall CEO.

Reilly was the first president of GM Daewoo in 2002 and was also the mastermind behind the automaker’s growth in the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions before assuming the top position at GM Europe in 2009.

“Nick Reilly has answered the call for GM at every turn”, said the company’s CEO Dan Akerrson. “He returned to Europe and successfully led the turnaround of our operations there during one of the most tumultuous times in our company’s history.”

Reilly will remain in the GM Executive Operations Committee in an advisory role until his retirement in March.
