Standing alongside the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV at the 2011 edition of the Tokyo Motor Show will be the production version of the Japanese firm’s Global Small Concept that was first shown in Geneva earlier this year.
The Mirage is a new B-segment size model developed for emerging markets. The low-cost five-door hatchback measures 3,710mm long, 1,665mm wide and 1490mm high, with the company claiming that, it provides “a comfortable interior space for five adults”.
The styling has been significantly toned down from the concept model, but that was more or less expected from Mitsubishi.
The Japanese carmaker says that it has implemented a variety of measures including the use of lightweight materials throughout, a reduction in rolling resistance and higher efficiency through detailed improvements to the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, and aerodynamics, all aimed to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Depending on the market, the new Mirage will be offered with 1.0-liter to 1.2-liter gasoline engines, while certain models will be equipped with a regenerative braking system and start-stop technology, as well as a new-generation CVT.
The most frugal Japanese market model will return a fuel economy of up to 30km/lt [equal to 70.6mpg US or 3.3lt/100km].
The Mirage will first go on sale in Thailand in March of 2012, with more markets to follow later in the year.
