Ferrari’s engineers have been working overtime in the past year as the Italian company has several new or updated models in the pipeline, including a replacement for the 599 GTB Fiorano that we scooped last week, a new flagship Enzo model and a mild facelift for the California.
And if these fresh spy shots are anything to go by, Ferrari may also be readying a new addition to its California hardtop-roadster family.
As reported previously, the 2012 California that is expected early next year will be updated from within featuring a more powerful 4.3-liter V8 with around 490-horses, a faster transmission and a lighter chassis with upgraded suspension bits.
The camouflaged prototype seen in these pictures was fitted with a new hood featuring Ferrari’s traditional triangular-shaped air inlets. While the vents were hidden on the road, as soon as the car hit the racetrack, Ferrari’s test drivers removed the plastic cover.
Our spy photographer also told us that the car’s engine sounded far more aggressive than the regular California.
One possible explanation is that Ferrari is developing a more hardcore version of the roadster model in the likes of the 599 GTO. If that’s the case, then you should expect a slightly more powerful variant of the standard car’s V8 engine along with lighter components and a stiffer suspension setup.
We’ll keep you informed on any news that comes our way, but in the meantime, scroll down to check out the spy pictures.
