Looks like politics may have entered motorsports as well. First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill Biden appear to have been booed by at least some fans at Sunday’s NASCAR season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The pair’s participation at the race as honorary grand marshals was meant to promote the “Joining Forces” program on behalf of military families. Retired Army Sgt. Andrew Barry, who was wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his family were standing beside them when the incident occurred.
Video footage from the event show that the sounds of booing can be heard as soon as Michelle Obama is announced.
According to ABC News, White House officials responded that there were more cheers than boos. Even though it’s hard to tell if that’s true given all the noise, you can see the video right after the jump and judge for yourself.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering, Tony Stewart won the 2011 championship despite tying with Carl Edwards in the final standings because he had more race victories.
