It was July 2, 2010, when the last Dodge Viper SRT10 rolled off the assembly lines of the Chrysler Group’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit. The end of production also meant that the facility was idled for the last 17 months.

But that’s about to change as today, Chrysler announced that it will reopen the Conner plant for the production of the next generation SRT Viper, which will be unwrapped at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April before it goes on sale later in the year.

“The next generation Viper will make its return to the product lineup in late 2012 as a 2013 model,” said Ralph Gilles, President and Chief Executive Officer of the SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “We’re extremely excited that our ultimate American sports car will continue to live on and be produced exclusively here in the Motor City.”

The reopening of the plant also brings good news for the workers, as some 150 jobs, both hourly and salaried, will return to the city of Detroit. Chrysler said that hourly employees who previously worked at Conner were first offered the opportunity to return to their home plant.

Production of the next Viper will commence in late 2012, but the company noted that employees began reporting for training and orientation this fall.
