At a press event for the introduction of the new 2013 Malibu on Monday, General Motors confirmed the presentation of a turbocharged model to Motor Trend magazine.
Chevrolet officials said that the force-fed variant of the Malibu would be introduced in about a year’s time from now, without elaborating further on the specifications of engine or the model trim.
There’s speculation that GM may use the SS or perhaps even the RS moniker for the turbocharged Malibu sedan. The Detroit automaker’s engine bin currently includes a 220HP 2.0-liter Ecotec Turbo and the more potent 2.0-liter Turbo unit with 270-horsepower used on the flagship Buick Regal GS, while GM is also believed to be working on a brand new 2.0L four-cylinder turbo engine.
For now, the 2013 Malibu will launch initially with a 2.4-liter four-pot with eAssit producing 182HP from the engine and 15HP from the electric motor, and a 2.5-liter inline-four rated at 190-horsepower.
