If you are high on drugs, you can do some pretty foolish, and ultimately very dangerous stuff – like stealing a police SUV wearing nothing but your underwear, which is precisely what Ryan Elliot Cunningham did last Friday, December 23.
It all started when Blackman-Leoni Township police arrested the 34-year old drug addict at the Colonial Inn Motel on Ann Arbor Road.
According to a report from MLive, the officers handcuffed Cunningham and placed him on the rear seat of their Chevrolet Tahoe SUV patrol car, while they went inside the motel to check his room.
Even though he was under the influence of drugs, the man not only managed to free himself from the handcuffs in front of him, but he also slipped through the vehicle’s protective screen and drove off the with the police SUV!
Cunningham lead several officers on a wild car chase through three counties reaching speeds of up to 120mph (190 km/h) before he crashed on U.S. 23, just north of the Ohio border in Monroe County.
The entire incident was captured on the patrol vehicle’s dash-mounted camera.
After his arrest, Cunningham was taken to the hospital and then to the Jackson County jail. He is now facing several felonies including methamphetamine- and firearm-related charges, auto theft and fleeing a police officer.
Not surprisingly, Cunningham told the judge that he “didn’t remember much” and that he had “no intent of hurting the public”.
