Our scoop photographers have snagged a prototype of the Peugeot 5008 minivan while testing on the snow-covered roads of Germany.

The only visible differences between the production version of the 5008 and the test car seen here are the prototype’s widened front and rear fenders.

Given that the seven-passenger model is a recent addition to Peugeot’s range as it received its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and went on sale in most European countries in late 2009 / early 2010, there are two possible explanations.

The first is that the French carmaker is using the 5008 as a test mule to try out the platform for another model.

The second explanation is that Peugeot is working on a crossover-ish variant of the 5008, perhaps something in the likes of the 508 RXH fitted with the same Hybrid4 diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain, which could explain the wheel arch extensions.
