And the winning entries for the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year are the Hyundai Elantra and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque respectively. The announcement was made today on the sidelines of the 2012 Detroit Motor Show.
The winners for each category were chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.
This is the second time that Hyundai has won the award, the first being with the Genesis sedan in 2009. The jurors gave the Elantra 174 points, versus 161 for the Passat and the 155 for the Focus, which were the two other finalists.
Though many will rightfully disagree with the term, “truck of the year” as all the finalists were SUV/crossover models, fact is that Land Rover secured its first ever win in the event securing 254 points against 142 for the Honda CR-V and just 94 for the BMW X3.
Last year’s winners were the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Explorer.
