The Kia Rondo minivan and Optima sedan are included in a new recall over a faulty airbag in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] said that the recall involves 145,755 vehicles and affects certain 2006-2008MY Optima sedans manufactured from September 29, 2005, through January 29, 2008, and 2007-2008MY Rondo minivans built from September 13, 2006, through March 21, 2008.

According to the NHTSA, over time, the clock spring contact assembly for the driver’s side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) may become damaged and prevent the airbag from deploying.

In a letter to the NHTSA, the South Korean maker said that it will notify owners of the affected models, and dealers will replace the vehicle’s air bag clock spring contact assembly as necessary, free of charge.

The company added that the safety recall is expected to begin during March 2012.
