Remember the Mini Rocketman Concept from last year’s Geneva Motor Show? Over the past few months, there had been several reports saying that the BMW Group was planning to put the city-car sized Mini into production by 2016.

Today, Car is reporting that the Germans have shelved those plans for a smaller Mini model inspired by the Rocketman.

According to the British magazine, because of the vehicle’s small footprint (3,419 mm or 11 ft. 3 in. long), in order to achieve the desired levels of stability and handling as well as to adhere to current safety regulations, the BMW Group would have to invest a considerable amount in the development of a smaller platform.

Even though the Rocketman may be dead, it’s styling language is believed to find a new life in the next generation of Mini models including the firm’s traditional hatchback.
