Exactly a week ago, we brought you the first spy shots of the third generation of the BMW X5 SUV spotted on the road.
While it’s too early for the prototypes to start shaking off the heavy camouflage, our man with the long lens was able to snag another round of pictures, this time while the crossover was trying out the snow in Germany.
The skinny on the new X5, which carries the F15 codename, is that it will ride on a new platform that along with the lighter body will help shed some pounds. The new model will feature a similar engine lineup to the current X5 with straight-six turbocharged gasoline and diesel units and a force-fed V8 gasoline engine.
Sources from Germany report that it is possible BMW may present two hybrid models, one fitted with the same 306HP 3.0-liter TwinTurbo inline-six gasoline engine and a 40kW/54HP electric motor integrated into the 8-speed auto transmission found in the new 3-Series Hybrid, and the other combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with an electric motor.
On a sportier note, BMW’s new M Performance sub-brand will present one or more models based on next X5 while the M division’s flagship model will continue using a twin-turbocharged V8.
The new X5 will most likely be revealed in late 2013.
