These new spy photos plopped in our inbox today affording us a fresh look at the next BMW 3-Series Coupe, which may or may not be called the 4-Series. Regardless of the name, one thing’s for sure: the two-door model will be based on the sixth generation of the 3-Series sedan.
Leaving aside the first 3-Series, codenamed E21, which was only offered as a two door model anyway, with the exception of the 1980s E30 model, all the rest of the 3-Series Coupes featured significant styling changes over their four-door counterparts.
This tradition will continue with the new F32 model that will share very few, if any, body panels with the four-door sedan. If you look at the pictures that follow, you’ll see that the F32 has typical coupe proportions with long front doors and a lower greenhouse that is heavily slanted towards the back.
While the silhouette is similar to the current model, the new F32 appears to feature a more aggressive and lower front end and a more flattened rear end in the likes of the 6-Series Coupe.
Our spies are still trying to snag the interior but our guess would be that, aside from the four-seat setup, very few styling changes will be made to the cabin seen in the 3-Series sedan.
Don’t expect any surprises under the hood either as the saloon’s powertrains will be transferred without any changes to the coupe.
Depending on the market, buyers will have the option of both four-cylinder and straight-six turbocharged diesel and gasoline engines topped by the latest version of BMW‘s 3.0-liter force-fed six-cylinder unit, probably with 306-horses.
Transmission choices will include both a six-speed manual and an 8sp automatic, while BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will also be on the menu.
A pure M variant (M3 Coupe or M4) as well as sporty versions developed under BMW’s soon-to-be launched M Performance sub-brand will also show up down the line.
The new 3-Series Coupe or 4-Series will most likely arrive in 2013.
