Supercar makers usually have a limited line-up compared to normal manufacturers. However, when you only have two models and both are mid-engined two-seaters like Lamborghini does, then you are seriously limiting your clientele.
To address this problem, the VW Group-owned Italian company has made plans to add a third model to its range. All reports point to either a four-door super saloon, similar to the Aston Martin Rapide, or a high-end SUV, a spiritual successor to the late 1980s LM002.
When Lamborghini presented the Estoque sedan concept at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, most assumed that eventually, this would be the one to get the green light.
Since then, there have been numerous contradicting reports about either the Estoque or the SUV being Lambo’s third model. Last December, its CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that the Estoque “had a more enthusiastic response than we had expected” and dismissed the SUV because “it is not really a luxury car”.
So the Estoque it is then, or so we thought until another source claimed that Lamborghini is currently preparing an SUV concept to gauge public reaction.
At some point, the people at Sant’ Agata will eventually have to make a decision. Our take is that the fabulous-looking four-seater saloon is much more true to the brand’s core values than an SUV, no matter how good it may be on the road. It would also give the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and most importantly, Ferrari’s FF some serious competition.
