The convertible edition of the BMW 3-Series may be the least popular body style in the range, but it’s one that is widely considering to be leader in its segment while also returning higher profits per unit compared to the regular models.

And whereas most manufacturers prefer to offer either a coupe and a soft top cabriolet or a single hardtop convertible model, with the presentation of the fifth generation 3-Series Convertible in 2006, BMW decided to do both.

This won’t change with the next generation model as the Convertible variant will also feature a retractable metal top. What may change, though, is the 3-Series moniker as rumor has it the two-door body styles could carry the 4-Series badge.

Whatever BMW calls it, we know for a fact that both the Coupe and Convertible will ride on the same platform architecture and share a similar engine lineup to the F30 3-Series saloon.

This means the four-seater drop-top will get BMW’s new turbocharged four-cylinder petrol units, namely a 1.6-liter for Europe and a global 2.0-liter with up to 240HP, a selection of turbo diesels for certain markets, and of course, a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight six gasoline.

BMW has not said if it plans to offer an M3 / M4 variant, but an M Performance model should make the cut.

The Convertible will follow the presentation of the Coupe model, with an expected launch date in the first half of 2013.
