After numerous spy shots started circulating around the web, Mini confirmed the existence of the special edition John Cooper Works GP hot hatch on the sidelines of the New York Auto Show earlier this month.
However, Mini might not be telling the whole truth as our scoop photographers nabbed a thinly disguised Coupe John Cooper Works (JCW) prototype that sports if not all, most of the performance parts seen on the GP hatchback test cars.
These include a modifed front bumper with a lower spoiler, a deeply set rear diffuser with twin exhaust pipes coming out of the center similar to the racing model and larger four-spoke alloy wheels.
The only thing missing is the hatchback’s pronounced roof wing, though we shouldn’t forget that is a prototype and not the final model.
If this test model turns out to be the Coupe JCW GP, then it’s almost certain that it will use the same uprated 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbo engine of the hatchback model and which is rumored to produce around 230-horses, or some 20hp more than the regular JCW variant.
