A defective engine crankshaft has forced Ferrari to issue a safety recall on certain 2011-2012MY 458 Italia and 2012MY California. The recall affects a total of 206 cars worldwide, of which 74 were sold in the States.
Ferrari said that due to an incorrect setup of the crankshaft-grinding machine, the crankshafts of the type F 136 engine found in the 458 Italia and California model were not manufactured according to specifications and may fail causing the engine to stall and possibly lead to a crash if the car is on the move.
In a filling to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Italian carmaker said it would offer owners of the affected models three options.
These include the installation of a new crankshaft and bearings on the V8 engine by an authorized dealer; the removal of the engine from the car and repair by Ferrari North America or a brand new engine that will be installed by Ferrari North America.
Ferrari said the safety recall is expected to begin before the end of May.
