The new BMW 3-Series sedan, Hyundai i30 compact hatchback, Mazda CX-5 crossover and Peugeot 208 supermini are the latest cars to be evaluated by Euro NCAP, the organization charged with crash-testing Europe’s vehicles.

All four models achieved a maximum five-star rating with Euro NCAP officials pointing out that carmakers have made significant improvements in the area of pedestrian protection.

Among the four vehicles tested by the European organization, the BMW 3-Series achieved a praiseworthy 78% in pedestrian protection, which Euro NCAP says is a good result for a compact executive car with no active bonnet. The Peugeot 208 notched 61% in the same test, only just making the 2012 5 star threshold of 60%, while the Mazda CX-5 scored 64% and the Hyundai i30 67%.

Euro NCAP also gave praise to the Mazda CX-5 for scoring maximum points in both side impact tests, the only car of the four in this test to do so, while the i30 managed to excel in child occupant protection. However, Euro NCAP noted that the i30 also showed weak protection of the chest in the side pole test.
