With automakers constantly adding new products to their lineups, the once easier to understand numeric naming systems have become a complicated affair.

For as long we can remember, Peugeot has been using three digits, and more recently, four digits as well, with the first number identifying the segment size, followed by a single or double ‘0’ in the middle, and an end digit signifying the generation of the vehicle.

Peugeot has decided to simplify its naming system by announcing that from now on, its models will no longer change their number when they are renewed with all names to end in either a ‘1’ or ‘8’.

The French automaker says that the end digit ‘1’ will be used on models that “offer value for money” and will supplement the regular range of vehicles with the end digit ‘8’. The first example is the new 301 compact sedan, designed mainly for emerging markets.

All the current models that end in ‘7’ will gain the end digit ‘8’ permanently once they are renewed (i.e. the 107 will become the 108).

Peugeot will continue to use the double zero for its taller models including crossovers and minivans, as well as double letters to qualify the derived body type (CC for coupe-cabriolet and SW for station wagon). The company did not say what it would do with its other model names like the RCZ coupe.
