Smart may be experiencing troubles in the four-wheel world, but that isn’t stopping the brand that was created by the late founder of Swatch, Nicholas Hayek, before it passed into the hands of Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler, from venturing into the world of motorcycles.
Today, Smart confirmed the production of a new, all-electric scooter that was previewed by the ‘escooter’ concept model in 2010. Smart said that the escooter will arrive in the market in 2014.
“The decision in favor of the escooter has been made,” said Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars, on the sidelines of the international dealer meeting in Davos, Switzerland. “With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future”.
The escooter study was displayed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show alongside the pure-electric ‘ebike’ that is already available for sale and the Fortwo Electric, which will launch on the market this summer.
Smart’s two-wheel study featured a disc-shaped wheel hub motor in the rear wheel with an output of 4 kW (equal to 5.4-horsepower) that allowed the scooter to reach a top speed of 45 km/h or 28mph.
The company said that the design of the escooter will be “developed and refined further” before it reaches showrooms in 2014.
