The moment of truth for the Toyota group and its entries in this weekend’s 40th Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race is almost here.
The Japanese carmaker will be represented in the race by four GT86 coupes, which is also known as the Toyota 86 in Japan and Scion FR-S in North America, and one Lexus LFA.
Toyota’s longtime motorsports partner Gazoo Racing will return to the Nordschleife to field the LFA in the SP8 class and two new race-prepared GT86 in the SP3 class. Gazoo Racing’s team of technicians and drivers will include Toyota employees from Japan, with Toyota claiming that the experience they gain from the race “will feed back directly into the work developing future vehicles“.
“The momentum of our team is very good,” said Gazoo Racing driver Akira Iida after a recent test race. “Our target for the 24 Hours Nürburgring race is to maintain a steady pace, in line with the way we have chosen to set up the vehicles. Nevertheless, we have run at good speed and confident we will be full ready before the 24-hour event.”
The other two GT86 coupes have been prepared by Toyota Motorsport and will be raced by the Toyota Swiss Racing Team. Both cars will participate in the competition class (V3) for production models.
