For the first time ever, all three six-wheeler racing cars that have participated in Formula 1, including the Tyrrell P34, March 2-4-0 and Williams FW08B, will be displayed together at the upcoming 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs from June 28 to July 1.
Never before have all three models gathered together in the same place, thus providing racing as well as car enthusiasts a unique opportunity.
Tyrrell raced the P34 six-wheeler with four wheels at the front and two at the rear in 1976 and 1977, while fellow British Formula 1 teams March and Williams also designed and built experimental six-wheeled cars, but with four wheels at the rear for increased traction.
The 1982 Williams FW08B with four rear wheels was tested once and set lap records with its uncommon set-up said to have improved grip and acceleration.
That was the last time we saw these kind of racing cars as in 1983, the new F1 regulations barred six-wheeled cars, as well as four-wheel-drive, putting an end to the development of the six-wheeled experiments.
