From the moment BMW decided to place the M badge on its 5-Series sedan back in the mid-1980s, the M5 immediately created its own niche in the executive saloon segment. In fact, it become so popular that many the Bavarian firm’s rivals followed its example in the years that came after the original M5’s launch.

Perhaps one of the more surprising challengers was GM’s Cadillac CTS-V, the first generation of which was presented in 2004 before it was replaced by the current model in 2008.

Benchmarked directly against the E60 M5 with a 500hp (507PS) 5.0-liter V10, the 2009MY Cadillac CTS-V even won some comparisons including a test by Road&Track in the summer of 2008.

Now, four years later, the Cadillac CTS-V remains unchanged sporting a 556hp 6.2-liter supercharged V8 for a zero to 60mph factory time of 3.9 seconds.

In the meantime, however, BMW presented a newer generation of the M5 featuring a 553hp (560PS) 4.4-liter twin-turbo’d V8 that can reach 60mph from standstill in 4.3 seconds with a 6-speed manual and 4.2 seconds with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

The U.S. launch of the new M5 this summer incited a new comparison test by Road&Track magazine.

We are not going to spoil the video by revealing the outcome but we will leave you with a question: if you had the $64,515 that Cadillac commands for the CTS-V and the $89,900 BMW wants for the M5, which one would you choose?
