While this wouldn’t be the first time we have witnessed a steering wheel coming off a racecar, it never gets old and…scary.

This latest incident occurred to Alex von Ehrheim while driving his Locost racer, which is a home-built clone of the open-top Lotus Seven sports car, at the Donington Park circuit in the UK.

The quick release steering wheel detached from the column while Ehrheim was approaching a turn, but he kept it together and quickly re-attached it avoiding the worse.

Here’s what Ehrheim wrote about the unnerving moment on his YouTube channel:

“Making a move for P2 at Donington Park into the old hairpin and then my steering wheel came off. Moral of the story – don’t buy a cheap quick release boss from ebay!”

See how it happened in the video after the jump.
