The Mexican Automobile Industry Association, or AMIA, said on Monday that production and exports of cars and light trucks hit record numbers both in May and during the first five months of the year, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
Last month, the country produced a record 228,048 vehicles, up 2.8 percent over the same month last year, while exports, despite a 0.5 percent drop in the U.S. and a 41 percent decline in Europe, were up 5.7 percent to 187,042 autos, due in part to a 32 percent increase to other Latin America countries.
From January to May, Mexico’s auto production rose 13 percent over the same period last year to a record 1.15 million units, while exports increased 14 percent to 945,530 vehicles, which also represents a new record.
“We are repeating once again record figures for production and exports,” said Eduardo Solis, president of AMIA. “We’ve been diversifying our markets.”
