Ever since Porsche borrowed a page from the 959 introducing all-wheel drive to its most famed model series back in 1989 with the 964 Carrera 4, the German automaker has been offering four-wheel drive versions of every generation of the 911.
This won’t change with the new 991 series, the range of which will be expanded with the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S models at the end of the year following a world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in late September.
After nabbing the new 911 Targa model, our scoop photographers also captured a 991 Carrera 4S testing at the Nürburgring race track.
Traditionally, the only way to tell apart the rear-wheel drive Carrera / Carrera S from their Carrera 4 / Carrera 4S siblings is the logo at the rear and the reflective strip between the tail lamps.
At a first glance, both seem to be absent from these prototypes, but if you look closely, you will see that Porsche has simply covered up the reflective strip.
Aside from the all-wheel drive system and the modified suspension that will add some weight to the car, there will be no other changes over the rear-wheel drive Carrera models.
The base Carrera 4 will be powered by 3.4-litre boxer engine with direct fuel injection rated at 345hp (350PS) at 7,400 rpm and 390 Nm at 5,600 rpm, while the Carrera 4S will get a 3.8-litre boxer engine with direct fuel injection producing 394hp (400PS) at 7,400 rpm and maximum torque of 440 Nm at 5,600 rpm.
