The new generation of the Ford Escape only just went on sale in the States this spring, but it has already received its first recall action after it was discovered that a miss-aligned carpet padding on the center console trim panel may interfere with the driver’s ability to apply the brakes properly.

“The reduced clearance may result in the driver’s foot contacting the side of the brake pedal while transferring the foot from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal, increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash,” the Blue Oval said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to Ford, the recall affects 8,266 Escape crossovers built from March 8, 2012 through June 7, 2012.

The company added that under the recall, dealers will remove the carpet padding and left-side console trim panel and replace it with a new panel, free of charge. The recall is expected to start at the end of July.
