Gas prices aren’t what they used to be but paying…$84,522.54 for 10 gallons of unleaded fuel ($8,452 a gallon or €1,818 a litre) is too much of a stretch even in the world of make-believe, yet this happened to a one Ray Crockett from Nashville after filling up at a local Mapco station.

We know what you’re thinking; mistakes can happen, which would be true if it only occurred once, but BP, the oil company behind Mapco, told News Channel 5 that at least 16 customers who used a credit card to pay for gas have been hit with five-figure bills over the last 10 days or so.

One Mapco customer, Nikki Johnson, told the news station that she paid $22.47 with her debit car for a coffee and gas but her bank statement showed that she was charged $58,278.35. Another Mapco customer at a different store bought $10 worth of gas and was hit with a $84,073.85 bill!

BP put the blame on a technical issue with their debit card processing as it had just launched a new point-of-sale system, which evidently, had some sort of bugs.

The oil company told News Channel 5 that it has apologized to customers and is in the process of sorting things out with their banks.
