These are some of the best spy pictures of the next generation 2014 Cadillac CTS yet as GM’s engineers have finally removed the black vinyl camouflage from the prototype models, a sign that we’re getting closer to the official reveal of the premium sedan model.
That’s not to say that we have a clear view of the new CTS, but by discarding the vinyl covers we can at least see the outline of the car and sample the latest interpretation of Cadillac’s “Arts & Science” edgy design formula.
While the styling will be crucial for the third generation CTS, one of the most important things to know about the new car is that it will finally grow in size to compete directly against the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS models instead of hovering between two categories.
The change in strategy comes after the presentation of the new Cadillac ATS that was designed as the brand’s BMW 3-Series and Infiniti G series rival.
Crucially, the CTS Mk3 will likely replace the current model’s Sigma II platform with a stretched version of GM’s new rear-drive Alpha platform architecture that underpins the ATS.
The current, second generation of the CTS saloon (sold as a 2013MY) which has been in production since 2007, is offered with a 270hp 3.0-liter V6, a 318hp 3.6-liter V6 and in the case of the flagship CTS-V, a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 556-ponies.
While the 3.6L V6 and possibly even the 6.2L V8 will continue to be available in the new model, there’s a strong possibility that Cadillac will replace the base 3.0L V6 with its new 270hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that was introduced in the ATS.
If Cadillac wants the CTS to succeed in Europe, it will also have to offer the new sedan model with a turbo diesel unit, though the General hasn’t made any plans official yet.
Expect the new CTS to make its world premiere sometime in 2013 with more body styles to be added to the range in due time.
