We already know that the next generation and first truly new Golf since the Mk5 (upon which the current Mk6 is heavily based), will receive its public debut at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show at the end of September.
But now we learn via a report from Autonews Europe that production of the Golf Mk7 will begin at Volkswagen’s German manufacturing plants in Wolfsburg and Zwickau in Germany, in early August and that the compact hatchback will roll out to European showrooms in November.
The new Golf will be the second model after the latest generation Audi A3 to make use of the VW Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform. It’s exterior styling is expected to be an evolution of the current model’s design DNA as Volkswagen does not want to alienate buyers of its most successful model series.
Aside from the conventional turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines ranging from a small-displacement 1.2-liter TSI to the 2.0-liter TSI in the GTI and the ‘R’ AWD sport models, the new Golf will also debut hybrid powertrains with gasoline- and diesel-electric powertrains as well as a pure-electric variant.
