The never-ending circle of life that is high-end sports car manufacturing has just taken another turn for the worst for German automaker Melkus, which on Monday morning filed for insolvency.
Originally founded in 1959, the Melkus brand emerged as a sports and racing car maker. After what was assumed to be an official shutting of its doors in 1986, the classic nameplate was restored in 2006 by none other than son of the founder, Peter Melkus.
With this revival, the restored Melkus brand set forth and created the all new RS 2000, a tribute to the original RS 1000, which made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.
Now though, with not enough sales to account for of the nearly €150,000 ($185,000) sports car, the Melkus brand is officially out of money and looking for a fresh start.
CEO Peter Melkus says that with proper funding a racing and GT version of the RS 2000 are planned within the next few years and a bright future for the company lies “well within the bounds of possibility.”
