After the revival of the Hyundai and Kia brands, complete with enormous sales to boast, the introduction of higher end luxury models like the Hyundai Genesis and Equus sedans and the Kia Quoris / K9 saloon, have placed the Koreans one step closer to more premium automakers.

By starting with newly refreshed models like the Sonata, Elantra and Veloster, Hyundai has gained more credibility in the average household than ever before.

With this new-found success, the Korean automaker could be looking to broaden it lineup to attack one of the toughest segments on the market, the compact executive sedan category.

A report from Automotive News suggests that Hyundai is in the process of producing a rear-wheel drive BMW 3-Series, and let’s not forget, Cadillac ATS rival as well, in the near future.

Inside sources close to Hyundai said the proposed model is codenamed “RK” and it is believed to be based on a modified version of the platform utilized on the current Genesis Coupe.

While both the Genesis and Equus are set for a makeover in late 2013 (for the 2014 or 2015 model year), Autonews says that the 3-Series rival wouldn’t arrive before 2015.

As more details emerge on the refreshed new top end models, we should find out more on a possibility of a new 3-Series challenger from Hyundai soon enough.
