A number of 2012 model year Mitsubishi i-MiEV hatchbacks are being recalled in the U.S. and Canada due to a potential issue with air-bag sensors.
The Japanese automaker said that on certain models, the air-bag sensors are incompatible with the self-diagnostic software used by the Safety Restraint System (SRS) system, causing the warning lamp to turn on.
In this case, it’s more than simply a problem of a warning light as the inflatable curtain and side impact airbags may not deploy or the front airbags may deploy late in the event of a crash.
According to Mitsubishi, the recall affects 291 cars in the U.S. and 49 in Canada, all built between November 4, 2011, and December 22, 2011.
The company said that dealers will replace incompatible sensors with updated ones free of charge. Mitsubishi has not yet provided a notification schedule for the recall.
